Trends

Happn.in collects and aggregates popular phrases used on Twitter within 20 miles of major cities. The ten most popular phrases each hour are posted to this site, and are tweeted four times a day to the Happn.in Twitter account for each city. To receive updates for your city, click the 'follow' link below your city on the home page.

Each trend within a city also has a Trend Setter, the person who sent out the first tweet that started the trend. Trend Setters are alerted through a special Twitter account of their trendy status.

How lists are generated

The lists of popular phrases for each city are recomputed every hour. The items on each list have been used significantly more often (in that city) during recent hours than in the past. Common words and phrases, urls, #hashtags, and @usernames are omitted from the lists.

A phrase's hotness is calculated with the ratio of the [percentage of users who used that phrase during the past hour] to the [mean percentage of users who used that phrase over the past week]. Phrases decay exponentially, and quickly drop from the list once they have stopped being used.
